How to Cleanse A Space: Home Edition

Keeping a clean and organized home can leave us feeling energized, productive and in a better mood. However, whether there is clutter or not, a home may not always feel like the resting space we need. Cleansing your home can make a difference in your day to day living!

What does it mean to spiritually “cleanse” a space?

Cleansing a space helps remove unwanted residual energies or spirits lingering in an area. These energies can be created by our emotional body (or others) and can accumulate over time. Residual energies in our homes can affect us by causing the following:

  • Stress/anxiety or depression
  • Anger or hurt after a conflict
  • Unable to move on from an issue
  • Lack of focus
  • Difficulty sleeping or relaxing

Cleansing routines can look differently based off your spiritual belief system. The routine described in this guide is for a basic cleanse that is applicable to any belief system! Adding additional steps won’t affect the results as long as your intentions are the same.

Step 1: Clean The Area Being Cleansed

For homes, cleansings typically occur room by room, starting from the bottom floor and proceeding upwards. Clean the room by removing clutter, organizing and removing any unwanted items, and wipe down surfaces. Consider opening windows and allowing fresh air to flow through the room. If harsh chemicals are necessary for a cleaning, wait until the air is cleared out before starting the cleansing. Finally, make sure there is enough room to move around the spaces needing cleansed.

Step 2: Set An Intention

Determining what energy you want to have in your home is the first and most important step part of cleansing. Inviting in energies of positivity, protection and abundance are common intentions to bring into your home. When you set an intention, stand still, take a deep breathe and calm your mind. Focus on bringing in feelings of positivity within yourself momentarily.

Step 3: Create A Cleansing Ritual

A cleansing ritual can be designed based off of your belief system. In general, a good cleansing ritual should emulate the act of removing or clearing energy and inviting the intended energies in. This can be done in many different ways. Here are some common examples:

  • burning candles, incense or sage
  • spraying blessed water or other metaphysical cleansing products
  • putting salt on the ground to absorb energies and cleaning
  • Ringing bells or sound bowls
  • reciting prayers, incantations or mantras
  • intentional meditation

For cleansing in a pinch, you can also set clearing intentions while you clean normally! Just make sure you maintain your focus on the intentions, otherwise you may get distracted and miss the spiritual part!

After your cleansing ritual, you should notice a shift in the room and how it feels. If you find yourself being able to breathe easier or notice your mood improve, this is a good sign!

Maintaining Clear Energy

Cleansing a space should occur regularly for a well balanced household. Homes should get each room cleansed once a month. For rooms that tend to attract more stress or require additional supportive energy, once a week or even daily cleanses can support a better balance in the room.

Another way to maintain clear energy in a home is to display crystals, plants, or create spaces honoring the energies you want to welcome in your home (such as shrines, collages, or sacred spaces).

A great cleansing practice can make the difference in how you start your day. Make the most of your space by welcoming in the happiness today!
