In a sense, maybe it is a little dramatic as dying.
The definition of a spiritual awakening in the context of this post is essentially a deeper connection to living and greater awareness beyond our “usual” perception of our living experience.
Every spiritual awakening is unique to the individual. Some achieve it through methods like meditation, substance use, or near death experiences. While those are common triggers for a spiritual awakening, they are not necessarily requirements. They can also appear and feel different.
What does a spiritual awakening look like?
Spiritual awakenings are meant to alter us in a way so that we can pursue a greater purpose or exist as a better version of ourselves. Often times a spiritual awakening doesn’t happen in one sudden moment, but usually a series of smaller changes before a big one. It may feel sudden though, especially if your view of life shifts in a dramatic way.
How a spiritual awaken affects us can look like the following:
- Shifts in worldview/belief systems
- Wanting to connect to a higher purpose
- Feeling restless for not having “found” a purpose or feeling stuck
- Depression/Anxiety
- Unusual levels of sensitivity
- Feeling isolated amongst peers
- Wanting to make deep changes to your life
- Unexplainable aches/pains and feeling drained
- Vivid dreams or unexplainable coincidences
- Feeling lots of energy at once
- Deeper connection to self and others
- Life feeling exceptionally chaotic
- Sleeping difficulties
Collectively society has been experiencing waves of spiritual awakenings, especially since 2020. Mini versions of these awakenings are called “downloads” or receiving information from a divine source that help you elevate your consciousness. This can sometimes appear as ringing in the ears, waking up around 3am or hearing inner voices with insight.
So why is this happening to me?
First of all, it’s not something to worry about. This is happening FOR you, not to you. A deeper connection to the Universe is guiding you along an unforeseen path to an even greater destination. It’s also not your fault that you’re experiencing this. Spiritual awakenings can start off uncomfortable and be intimidating if you’re unfamiliar with the process. While we can’t necessarily control the way our lives shift in the aftermath of a spiritual awakening, it’s important to remember we still have a choice in what we say and do as a result.
What can I do to cope?
First and foremost, be honest. If you’re experiencing a spiritual awakening, the faster you open yourself up to the chaotic changes going on in your life, the easier it will be to master navigating spirituality’s mysterious ebbs and flows. Staying connected with close loved ones may be a challenge at times, so try to find a balance between time to self reflect and seeking connections with others. Finally, if your spiritual awakening symptoms are making life too difficult to manage on your own, seek help from professionals who can guide you through how to process. While isolation may sometimes be necessary during big changes, it’s important to practice moderation and not seek out self-destructive coping mechanisms or give up on connection entirely for too long.
